A study of convection velocities in a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer
نویسندگان
چکیده
Time-resolved DPIV measurements performed in wall parallel planes at several wall normal locations in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) are used to illuminate the distribution of wall parallel velocities in a three-dimensional energy spectrum over streamwise, spanwise, and temporal wavelengths. To our knowledge, this is the rst time this type of spectral distribution has been reported. Slices of the 3D spectrum can give insight into the propagation of di erent scales in the ow as well as the streamwise and spanwise extent of dominant scales. Measurements were performed at three wall normal locations, y = 34;108; and 278, in a zero pressure gradient TBL at Re = 470 . Two high speed cameras placed side-by-side in the streamwise direction give a 10 streamwise eld of view with a time step of t = 0:5 between consecutive elds. Far from the wall the convection velocities of all scales are very close to the local mean velocity in agreement with the work of Dennis and Nickels, while at y = 34 it was found that all measured scales in the ow convect faster than the local mean in agreement with Krogstad et. al. The variation of the convection velocity with scale and distance from the wall will be discussed.

On Interaction of T S Waves and 3 D Localized Disturbance in a Divergent Flow Under Zero Pressure Gradient
To simulate the effect of free st ream turbulence on turbulent spot formation, experiments were conducted on the interaction of localized three-dimensional disturbances with the harmonic waves in a laminar boundary layer on a flat plate. Experiments conducted in three-dimensional diverging flow (but zero pressure gradient) show, while individually the disturbances decay downstream, their intera...

In this paper, the similarity solution of turbulent boundary layer flow on the flat plate with zero pressure gradients is presented. By employing similarity variables the governing partial differential equations are transformed to ordinary ones with inconsistent coefficients and solved numerically with the use of Runge–Kutta and shooting methods in conjunction with trial and error procedure. In this study, the influence of a geostrophically balanced horizontal density gradient on turbulent convection in the ocean is examined using numerical simulations and a theoretical scaling analysis. Starting with uniform horizontal and vertical buoyancy gradients, convection is driven by imposing a heat loss or a destabilizing wind stress at the upper boundary, and a turbulent layer soon devel...
متن کاملEffects of Pressure Gradient on Higher Order Statistics in Turbulent Boundary Layers
This paper investigates the effect and influence of pressure gradient on the skewness and flatness in turbulent boundary layers, which are subjected to adverse, zero and favourable pressure gradients. The large scale features are found to increase the skewness in the near wall-region for adverse pressure gradients in a manner similar to the effect of changing Reynolds number as documented by Me...
